1916 Vega Cylinder Back Mandolin
This is a Vega Cylinder Back Mandolin from the early 20th century. Back and sides appear to be rosewood, but there are some sections that almost look like mahogany, so I'm not sure if these were laminated, or the rosewood was painted on. The pickguard is larger on this mandolin than on other similar instruments that I have seen online. Has some wear, and slight sinking in the top, but playability is not affected (action is 5/64" on the bass side, 4/64" on the treble, at the 12th fret, with some saddle left). Both back braces and one top brace have been reglued in our shop.
Has a nice hollow, woody tone, somewhere between a "bowlback" mandolin, and a more modern "A" style, with "scooped" mids.
Original Hard Shell Case included.
Serial Number: 32512 (ca 1916, based on information available online)
